Summer Activities for all ages

Thursday afternoons in June @ 2:00 p.m.

June 2 – Get into the Beat: Pound! Our Summer Reading Program Kickoff.  Join Kristine Hunt from the Fowler Flipsters as she leads us in a fun & energizing drummers workout known as POUND FIT.  Fun for all ages

June 9 – Step up to the plate it’s Baseball! Hosted by South Newton’s Varsity Baseball coach, Glenn Donahue, as he will be showing us some amazing baseball tips, a few demonstrations & giving tips on what it takes to make the team.

June 16 – Dancing on your toes: Ballet 101! Brooke Heyde Linn shares her 10 years dance experience of which 2 years was in Purdue’s Repertory Dance.  So don’t miss out on your chance to dance like a pro.

June 23 – On Your Mark, Get Set…Relay! Get your game on as we play Tunnel relay; Egg & Spoon Race; Crab Race; & the Sponge Race.  Be Warned: Children may get wet in this activity.


Wednesday afternoons in June @ 3:00 p.m.

June 1 – Chocolate Wars! Join us for the Chocolate Olympics as you compete in games such as M&M Chaos; Oreo Tower; Chocolate Trivia; & Chocolate Creations.  A sweet time will be had by all.

June 8 – Town Wide Scavenger Hunt. Get ready to go crazy for an hour of controlled chaos as you scavenge the town performing silly tasks at key locations.  First team back wins!  Must sign a permission form & a Safety Pledge to participate.  Talk to the children’s librarian, Miss Lane for further details.

June 15 – Movie Marathon: The Maze Runner series. Relax & have fun as you watch a fan favorite The Maze Runner series & enjoy some tasty snacks.  Kids 10-12 must have a form signed by parents to watch the PG13 movie.  Estimated time frame per movie: Maze Runner – 3-5 pm & Scorch Trials 5-7pm.

 All ages are welcome to programs and the reading challenge.

 Reading program runs from June 1st through July 23rd.

Summer Reading Party on Thursday, Aug. 4 @ 2:00 p.m. for those children who complete & turn in their summer reading calendars on time will be invited to watch a special live animal show hosted by Indiana Wild.


How many minutes/titles am I required to read?

PreK-5th grade: 500 minutes ( Preschoolers can count the minutes they are read to)

6th-12th grade: 1,000 minutes

Age 18 & up: 10 titles

Those participating in the summer reading program will record their minutes or titles on the calendar  or reading log provided by the library.

Children who have read the required minutes and turned in their calendars on time will receive an invitation to the Summer Reading Party and have their names put in a drawing for prizes.

Adults(age 18 or older) who have read the required number of titles and turned in their reading log on time will have their name put in a drawing for prizes.


Prizes given away include Newton County Fair Grandstand event tickets, Newton County Fair ride passes, gift cards to various businesses, a month of free karate classes offered by the local karate place.

Play to win instant prizes when you rate a book you read; answer a trivia question correctly; or participate in Bingo.  More information at the library on these fun activities.
